Eddie
Palmieri and his five-piece band took the stage at
the elegant Sambuca-Addison last Tuesday evening accompanied
by the electric applause of his fans. The music was
a pleasing combination of traditional jazz and Afro-Cuban
sounds. Palmieri excelled at his piano while actively
leading his band which consisted of a trumpet player(Brian
Lynch), a trombonist(Conrad Herwig), the "Captain
of the Rhythm Section" on congas(Jose Clausell),
a bassist(Joe Santiago) and a drummer(Dafnis Prieto).
After some initial feedback problems, Mr. Palmieri
and his band began to sizzle.
The
highlight of the show, in addition to Palmieri's masterful
piano improvisations, was the smooth brass section.
Alternating
solos, Mr. Lynch and Mr. Herwig charmed the crowd
with their stylish and tasteful jazz interpretations.
The rhythm section, consisting of bass, congas and
drums, added a pulsating Latin beat that flavored
the music with a fiery groove. While the brass and
percussion shined, it was Eddie Palmieri that tied
the sounds together with his imaginative brilliance
on piano. At age 65, the seven-time Grammy Award winning
Palmieri may soon retire from touring. This concert
was a special visit from a proven jazz legend.
Although
this is a musical review, it is difficult not to mention
Sambuca Jazz Cafe without alluding to the incomparable
cuisine. The calamari, Caesar Salad and the grilled
beef tenderloin were perfect while the dessert selections,
such as the Chocolate Decadence Cheesecake, were truly
memorable. For a night of great jazz and exceptional
cusine in a unique atmosphere, Sambuca is the place
to be!
