Chaz’s Christmas Party
Bands: SuperString, Ben Zephyr, American Heroes, Electric Crush

SuperString started the night off with a quite amazing performance.  With this show only being their third performance, after being together for only six months, this 5-piece band, fronted by a VERY talented female vocalist, amazed me.  They showed no stage fright at all.  I was most impressed with the vocalists’ ability to stay on key, alongside sustaining the note(s) for over 5 seconds.  The band’s musicianship and chemistry really show to be a natural given.  The pace of the music is groovy and steady.  They closed out with a cover song from Led Zeppelin, which they did a very good job at. This band is an up and coming rock/alternative band that will soon catch the eyes of a lot of versatile music lovers here in D/FW and possibly around the world.

Performing second on the bill was a very talented 5 piece band, “Ben Zephyr”.  When this band took the stage, I was not too sure to expect with the name being said.  The band’s musical ability, mixed with their energy, had the biggest crowd of the night.  After their first song, the crowd started to come more alive as people were getting into their music.  Ben Zephyr is a littler heavier than SuperString was.  I thought the band had great musical talent and used every aspect of their knowledge on their instrument they could.  The tone of the guitar was nice and clear.  All notes could be defined and the lead guitarist’s work was very impressive.  I look forward to seeing these guys again.  Look for their new CD to be recorded later on in 2006!

Next up was a 3-piece band called “American Heroes”.  The one thing this band did have over the others of the night was their vocal harmonies between the guitarist and bassist.  This band had an alternative/classic rock feel to them.  For a 3 piece band, they had the ability to cover for a 2nd guitarist even with only one guitarist on stage.  They have a lot of space to fill in such a small band, but they have been able to do it well for this show.  After playing a full set of original tunes, then a quick joke about Xanax, They closed the night off with a Jimi Hendrix cover song: “Fire”.  Be sure to look for these guys.

Ending the night was probably the heaviest band of the show, “Electric Crush”.  This band’s name speaks for it’s self.  Their sound was a bit more on the harder rock pace, but with classic rock vocals.  They had plenty of good sing-a-long songs.  One of the favorites to me was “American Pride”.  The tone of the band’s guitars was thick and full, a little different for alternative, in my opinion.  The leads were structured well, unless if improvised, very well done.  This group had a very strong and energetic stage show.  The band also closed out with a Jimi Hendrix song as well.  It also happened to be “Fire”.  However, they encouraged the fans to sing along with the band.   I thought it was a good cover as well.

Overalll, all these bands did a very wonderful job, and I look forward to seeing them again very soon.  I could not pick a favorite, for they were all amazingly good.   Keep an eye out for any of these four bands in the near future.
