Frolic
An
interview with Frolic frontman Christian Sly on the loss of former
guitarist Matt Setzer. Early
in the morning on March 31st,
Frolic guitarist Matt Setzer passed away due to a tragic automobile
accident. With help from many friends, the remaining members of the
band put together a benefit concert at Club Clearview on Friday, April
23. All proceeds from the show went to the Setzer
family to help pay for funeral costs. The lineup was as follows:
FFTN
Solace
Generic
Danas Fast
Monkeyshyne
Matthew JC
Christian Sly
With the death of Frolic's guitarist, we wanted to know the fate of the
band, so to get a little insight we went to lead
vocalist/guitarist/pianist Christian Sly, and here is what he had to
say:
DM: How did the band react to the
death of their guitarist?
CS: Really just shock
and disbelief......that lead us into doing whatever we could to help
his
family.
DM: How did his family?
CS: They lost their only
son..............as good as to
be expected I guess.
DM: When and where will the funeral be
and will it be open to the public for
his fans to bid their farewells?
CS: We buried Matt at the Holy
Redeemer Cemetery in Desoto TX on Friday, April
2nd.
DM: Will the band continue on? If so,
who will replace Matt Setzer?
CS: The band will definitely
continue, but we aren't even looking just yet.
Just still trying to deal with everything.
DM: How will this effect the band's
sound?
CS: It will affect our sound just
slightly in guitar personality. Matt added
a lot with his lead ability, but didn't contribute much to the song
structure or lyrics.
DM: What plans did you have in the
works and how will his death effect them?
CS: We had a lot of things happening
for the band in the coming months out of
state, but this is such a huge loss for us that we'll have to regroup
and
hope that the opportunities still remain when we regroup.
DM: You co-wrote the song "Slow Down"
off of your album, Beaten: The Black and Blue Album- what was the
inspiration for the song?
CS: I wrote it for a close
friend that was being stalked by an ex-lover.
DM: Who organized this benefit?
CS: Justin Foster the drummer for the
band Danas
Fast.
DM: Why did you choose the bands you
chose?
CS: They're all good friends that
we've accumulated over the years in the scene.
DM: How soon can we expect to see
Frolic live again?
CS: I hope that it takes us
no longer than a couple of months to be ready again, but it may take a
while
to find someone that really connects with us the way Matt did so well.
DM: Is there anything particular that
you would like to say?
CS: I'd just like to
thank everyone that has been so good to us over the last few
weeks. It's
been extremely hard and everyone's help has definitely lessened the
load.
